We told you about the terrific Iroel Sánchez appearing as a panelist, but there’s more panelists we want you to be aware of.

The first is Sinn Fein MP Chris Hazzard, he:

  • Is a signatory of the Open Letter ‘Let Cuba Live’ which appeared in the New York Times calling for the sanctions on Cuba brought in by Donald Trump to be lifted immediately.

  • Is a member (MLA) of the Northern Ireland Assembly for the South Down constituency from April 2012

  • Has been the Member of Parliament for South Down since the 2017 general election.

  • Was the Minister for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland from May 2016 until the Executive's collapse in January 2017.

The next person is Camila Escalante of Kawsachun News, an independent news outlet covering Bolivian news.

Helen Yaffe is a figure with extensive experience in Cuba. Yaffe is:

  • A Senior Lecturer in Economic and Social History at the University of Glasgow, specialising in Cuban and Latin American development

  • A Visiting Fellow at the Latin America and Caribbean Centre at the London School of Economics

  • A founding member of Rock Around the Blockade, a British campaign in solidarity with Cuba

  • The author of We Are Cuba! How a Revolutionary People Have Survived in a Post-Soviet World (Yale University Press, 2020) and Che Guevara: the Economics of Revolution (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009)

Yaffe just returned to the UK from Cuba, so she has firm knowledge on the current situation.

Carlos Ron is Vice Minister for North America at the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry. He’s also the President of the Simon Bolivar Institute for Peace and Solidarity Among Peoples.

Fiona Edwards is a journalist, and co-founder of the international organising committee of the No Cold War campaign.

Manolo De Los Santos is the founding director of the People’s Forum in New York City, works with the Tricontinental Institute, and is a Globetrotter/Peoples Dispatch fellow.

Arnold August, a great friend of The Canada Files, is the final speaker we want to tell you about. His writings for this outlet can be found here. He is an award-winning political journalist who has written three books on Cuba (Democracy in Cuba and the 1997-98 Elections, Cuba and Its Neighbours: Democracy in Motion and Cuba-US Relations) and visited the country on many occasions.

August has informed us that he will speak against the colour Revolution in Cuba being promoted by some “left” media in the US and Canada.

The terrific moderator for this panel will be Radhika Desai. She is:

  • A Professor of Political Studies at the University of Manitoba.

  • The Director of the Geopolitical Economy Research Group.

  • The author of Geopolitical Economy: After US Hegemony, Globalization and Empire.

We offer our thanks yet again to the four presenters of this event: the Geopolitical Research Economy Group, The Black Alliance for Peace, No Cold War, and Tricontinental Institute).

This is a key event, which we hope will assist many in obtaining a clear anti-imperialist understanding of the current situation in Cuba.

Note: We sincerely thank Iroel Sánchez for having the publication La Pupila Insomne republish our original announcement of being a co-sponsor.

Editor’s note: The Canada Files has spent 21 months doing critical investigative reporting on Canada's imperialist foreign policy. We’ve established a clear track record of exposing the truth Canada's political establishment hides from you. There's so much more we can do, but only with your financial support.
